Climate Change

Helping our farmer-members adapt to changing environmental conditions is an important part of GFO’s strategic plan. Many of our research priorities are tailored to providing practical solutions for our farmer membership including identifying new environmental threats, improving farming practices, and introducing hardier seed varieties.

We encourage the Ontario government to continue to invest in research and innovation as part of the Climate Change strategy, as we believe this is an area where progress has been made, and can continue to be made, to address both adaptation and mitigation. It will be important as Ontario develops its Climate Change policy to consider the advancements made by individual grain and oilseed farmers when determining base-line benchmark data.

Great Lakes Protection

Grain Farmers of Ontario supports the need to protect and restore the ecological health of the Great Lakes and is committed to being a part of the solution to ensuring the Great Lakes remain “drinkable, swimmable and fishable.” We recognize the importance of environmental stewardship and our role in ensuring the proper use of fertilizer and that is why we have partnered with the Ontario government, the Canadian Fertilizer Institute and the Ontario Agri-Business Association on introducing a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) on 4R Nutrient Stewardship. The MOC will look at a voluntary program to increase the efficient use of fertilizer and contribute to the goals of the Water Quality Agreement.
