GUELPH, ON (January 29, 2018) – Grain Farmers of Ontario, the province’s largest commodity organization, representing Ontario’s 28,000 barley, corn, oat, soybean, and wheat farmers, today announces the newly created role of Agronomist. Laura Ferrier, a Certified Crop Advisor, has taken on this new position.
Grain Farmers of Ontario built the Agronomist role to increase its emphasis on productions issues, working with researchers, government and agri-business to ensure Grain Farmers of Ontario farmer-members are provided the most up-to-date information.
"It is vital to our farmer-members that we help develop tools to increase grain production efficiency while improving our environment. Creating an Agronomist position allows Grain Farmers of Ontario to work to bridge gaps between research advances and production technology, and advocate for practical solutions that farmers can implement in their farming operations. We are thrilled to have Laura take on this new role," said Barry Senft, CEO, Grain Farmers of Ontario.
As Agronomist, Ferrier will work across Grain Farmers of Ontario and lead efforts to expand production opportunities for grain farmers in Ontario. Ferrier will look at current and emerging issues in production agriculture, including precision agriculture, soil health, nutrient management and soil fertility, climate change, and resistance management.
Prior to taking on the Agronomist role, Ferrier was a member of the Communications team at Grain Farmers of Ontario.
Ferrier will report to Crosby Devitt, Vice President, Strategic Development, who was brought on to lead research, market development, communications, and wheat marketing in April 2017 (Grain Farmers of Ontario Announces Vice President).
