Call for Proposals

Grain Farmers of Ontario Call for Proposals of Corn, Soybean and Wheat Research

The Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO) welcomes the submission of proposals for research conducted in corn, soybean or wheat for funding in 2012.

GFO targets research and innovation to opportunities that will enhance our farmer members’ returns. Emphasis this year is being placed on research in the priority areas of agronomy and production, as well as insect and disease. Exceptional proposals in other areas will also be considered. Researchers seeking funding in 2012 must submit proposals by the deadline of Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 5:00 pm. All proposals will be reviewed by the GFO Research Committee and the GFO Board of Directors. It is expected that researchers will be notified of the GFO’s funding decisions in mid-February, 2012. Please submit research proposals by email to: awcoleman@gfo.ca.

Please follow the ‘2012 Guideline for Research Proposals’ provided. Please also consider the enclosed document ‘Grain Farmers of Ontario 2012 Research Priorities’ to ensure that your proposal is aligned with the GFO’s priority areas of research. GFO strongly encourages partnerships amongst research institutions and with other funding agencies.

Reminder to sample your fields for ear moulds
With the wet weather expected for the weekend, it’s a good time to exercise your Best Management Practices and inspect your corn before harvest. While scouting your field for ear moulds, identify the rate of disease, the hybrids you have, and the planting date. Take samples from 2 different locations in the field, and collect a total of at least 10 ears. Hand shell the ears and mix thoroughly before sending to a lab for testing. Obtaining test results prior to harvest will eliminate any surprises when you go to sell the grain. Below is a list of labs in Ontario where grain samples can be analyzed:

Superweeds on CBC's "The Current"

Anna Maria Tremonti, host of CBC radio’s “The Current” brought farmers’ struggles with herbicide-resistant weeds to the attention of many Canadians this week when the show on “Superweeds” aired on October 5. Grain farmer and Market Trends author Philip Shaw was interviewed for the farmer perspective and he talked of his experience with glyphosate resistant giant ragweed and how he has had to move away from glyphosate-tolerant crops as the system no longer makes sense on his farm.
